Caring for Your Brain to Be Your Best by Cindy Shaw

Living your best life isn’t about outward success or going through the motions. To truly be at your best, you need to learn how to prime your mind, and manage your mindset, as well as take care of the health of your brain. I get a lot of questions about how to maintain or improve brain health so that we can be at our best for our entire lives. I want to offer you three simple steps to take to help maintain and even improve your brain health.

 

  1. Prioritize sleep. If the brain isn’t resting and resetting fully every night, then it is operating in a stressed state. It can be hard to form memories, make executive decisions, or remain clear-headed. Make getting 7 hours of sleep a non-negotiable part of your routine.
  2. Clear your cabinets of toxins. Toxic chemicals in the products we use and consume can affect our brain chemistry and overall health. Look for non-toxic, natural alternatives to your health and beauty products, and choose healthy, organic produce over packaged foods full of unpronounceable ingredients.
  3. Get moving. Regular exercise can actually improve your brain health. Physical activity gets your blood flowing, and releases dopamine—your body’s happiness hormone. And nothing clears your head like a good long run, or hot yoga session. The key is to tune in to what motivates you—it can be rock climbing, soccer, or just a walk around the block with the dog.
